Automation requires reflection
Automation of processes involves a change for everyone in the company and therefore it requires thoughtfulness. It’s easy to forget about the person’s role in the process and focus only on getting the technology functioning. The big challenge however, is to get everyone involved, to think and act differently.
Digitalisation of processes
Many companies have understood the importance of digitalising their processes, but there are companies that have just begun their journey. Their challenge is to bring the entire organisation into the digital work, by engaging everyone from employee to management, to create a positive climate around the development.
Palette Software Project Manager Marie Louise Ankersjö lists important points in the work on digitalisation:
- It is important that digitalisation is seen as a fundamental change for the entire business and that it takes its place in the strategy.
- Employees need insight that digitalisation is an ongoing process.
- All the employees need to understand the company’s goals and ”the new way” of working.
- It is about how to integrate the individual with the tools, and that technological development is not about total automation.
”An important part of the successful implementation is Change Management. To elevate individuals who work in the process and make them involved in the automation.”
Marie Louise Ankersjö, Project Manager at Palette Software
Review work routines and staff’s knowledge
It may be scary and demanding to start this work, as it may be time consuming, and it will be necessary to review processes and routines.
Implementation requires that you review the staff’s knowledge and carry out profound development and upgrading of skills. It’s not about completely automating the business and work tasks, it’s about educating employees to get a common positive view of what digitalisation means. The focus is usually on digitalisation as an IT project, but it is about the entire company, values, organisation, processes, data, etc. A successful implementation therefore contains three key ingredients; the individual, the process and the technology.
”Leadership is incredibly important for a well-functioning digital work environment. In particular, you need to understand the need to develop digital skills.”
Jan Gulliksen, Professor of Human Computer Interaction at KTH (translated quotation from a Swedish article ”Utmaningar i den digitala arbetsmiljön”.
